Position Description and Responsibilities Opportunity:
GYF seeks a Digital Archives Management Intern  (the "position”) at the Everglades National Park (ENP), Bill Robertson Building, located at 40001 State Road 9336, Homestead, Florida, which is approximately 30 minutes from the downtown city of Homestead.  Internship will be a one year full-time equivalent (part time possible) position. 
 
Position Tasks:
The purpose of the position is to provide support to the South Florida Collections Management Center (SFCMC) Archivist and/or Digital Archivist, including assisting with conducting surveys, drafting processing plans, processing and cataloging digital archives to professional archival standards.  The SFCMC serves five parks, Everglades National Park (EVER), Dry Tortugas National Park (DRTO), Biscayne National Park (BISC), De Soto National Memorial (DESO) and Big Cypress National Preserve (BICY)], and the intern may be called upon to assist with managing collections from any/all of the park units.
 
The intern will be under the supervision of the SFCMC Archivist and/or Digital Archivist. It is expected that the intern:

  • Has completed coursework or has practical experience with archiving digital records.
  • Uses computer and appropriate software including Word, Excel, and Access for data collection, conducting surveys, documenting collection information and a variety of other work related tasks.
  • Uses appropriate computer software to establish baseline information about digital records, including running checksums and identifying duplicate files.
  • Provides support for the SFCMC Archivist(s) such as filing, coping, scanning and assisting with research requests as needed.
  • Drafts descriptive collection information as part of cataloging digital archival records.
  • Assist with digitizing archival collections, including primary text documents such as photographs, maps, and textual records.
Qualifications The successful candidate must have completed coursework pertaining to the management of digital records or have practical experience in conducting digital archiving/records management. The candidate must live within 50 miles of Everglades National Park (or be able to commute daily to and from the park), and have transportation to and from the job site. Must be able to drive a government vehicle. Candidate must be able to pass a background investigation before allowed to begin work.  
Candidates should enjoy working with the public and independently and have a knowledge of or willingness to learn about the parks served by the South Florida Collections Management Center. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing is essential.  Ability to work well with members of a team in order to accomplish goals is critical.
Work Environment Working conditions are primarily sedentary in an office environment, however the intern will be exposed to weather conditions typical to the South Florida climate. Full time or part time schedules are available. Special projects may be assigned based on park needs and intern interests/skills.
Vehicle/License Requirement The successful candidate must have a valid state driver's license.
Compensation and Benefits The selected applicant will be compensated at a rate of $15 per 20/40-hour work weeks during the 12 month period. Flexible schedules during the school year shall be accommodated. A transportation stipend of $40 a week for 52 weeks will also be provided to the successful candidate.
