Environmental Education & Stewardship Internship

The need for preserving all of our nation's history has never been greater, we're counting on you! HBCUI (Historically Black Colleges and Universities Internship) Program is a 10-week summer experience brought to you by Greening Youth Foundation in partnership with the U.S. National Park Service. As a part of HBCUI, students from schools around the country are putting their unique skills and talents to work in preserving the contributions of African Americans to our nation's history and culture. Participants gain real-world, on-the-job experience as they explore federal careers in the U.S. National Park Service.
 
POSITION OVERVIEW
Position Title Environmental Education & Stewardship Internship
NPS Unit Name Gulf Islands National Seashore – Gulf Breeze, FL
Position Dates May 28 – August 3, 2018
Position Description Gulf Islands National Seashore seeks energetic, diverse candidates to provide critical environmental education and stewardship. Join our team and help inspire the next generation of park stewards! The intern will work under the mentorship of Resource Education staff to enhance volunteerism, citizen science, outreach, and education in
the Florida area of the park. The main duties include:
 
 -Volunteer Program Support: Intern will work with the park to increase volunteerism by recruiting a new cadre of diverse volunteers and assist with the daily management of the VIP program. The intern will also prepare recommendations for the park based on a community needs assessment and volunteer needs assessment.
– Citizen Science Program Support: Intern will lead and participate in hands-on conservation/recreation efforts including citizen science and outreach focused on nesting shorebirds, sea turtles, seagrass beds, and climate change impacts.
– Resource Education Operations Support: Intern will assist with leading weekly recreational programs for under-served audiences, specifically, our kayaking and snorkeling programs.
– Community Outreach: Intern will participate in weekly community outreach events and Junior Ranger programs in the park and in the community.
– Partnership Development and Management: Intern will assist in the development of a database of community programs/outreach events that relate to the seashore's mission and goals (i.e. natural and cultural resource protection, barrier island environmental education, citizen science activities) and identify social media outlets to increase communication efficiency.
Qualifications
Outgoing personality who enjoys working with a team of professionals.
– Enthusiastic about working with diverse audiences and community members.
– Experience with public speaking and working with young people.
– Strong confident swimmer.
– Comfortable riding on a passenger ferry boat.
– Social media savvy.
– All degrees may be considered, but preferred fields of study include Education, History, Environmental or Biological Sciences, Parks and Recreation, or similar study.
– Ability to work unsupervised as part of a team or independently.
– Valid driver's license required. Intern must have a personal vehicle to get to their job site (there is no public transportation available).
– Work will include weekends, holidays, and evenings.
– Government security background clearance is required.
 
Additional qualifications:
  • Must be currently enrolled or recent graduate of an accredited HBCU institution
  • Must be between 16 and 35 years of age
  • Must be U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or U.S. national
  • Must be able to pass a federal background check
Work Environment The intern will spend the majority of the workday in the field. Extreme weather is likely during the summer months, including high heat and humidity, severe thunderstorms, tropical depressions, tropical storms, and hurricanes. The sunshine can be intense and eye, head and skin protection are essential. Sharks, jellyfish, and stingrays are present in the Gulf of Mexico. There are abundant insects during the warmer months such as gnats, mosquitoes, ants, bees, and wasps, and snakes can be seen on a daily basis in the field. 

 The intern will need to be a confident swimmer and will need to be comfortable leading visitors during water programs. The intern will be responsible for visitor safety during the water programs. The intern must also be comfortable riding on a passenger ferry. Indoor work is required at the visitor centers and computer work is required. Buildings are air-conditioned. Most buildings in the park are accessible.

Vehicle/License Requirement A valid driver's license is required. The student may operate government vehicles. Students that are in this position must carry a valid state issued ID with them at all times.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Compensation is at a rate of $400 per week
  • The park will provide onsite/shared housing. Housing is located on Santa Rosa Island near historic Fort Pickens. Housing is steps away from the beach and amazing sunrise and sunset views. Each housing unit has a downstairs kitchen and living room, two upstairs bedrooms and one full bathroom. The intern will have a private bedroom and will share common areas with one other intern.
  • Mandatory attendance at the all-expense paid Leadership & Careers Workshop in Washington, D.C. in August
