Position Description:
This Resource Assistant internship will provide exposure to the Forest Service, and provide advance training in the application of watershed principles and practices. The Resource Assistant will develop hydrology skills that require practical knowledge of the methods, procedures, and instrumentation used in hydrologic studies. Hydrology Technicians gather information on the quantity, quality, availability, movement, and distribution of ground water and surface water. Hydrology Technicians also evaluate water samples and data, prepare reports, and carry out related duties that support professional work in hydrology. The program will begin in September, and continue full-time for 24 weeks.
 
Major duties will include:

  • Validate existing surface water rights on Prescott NF (i.e., stock tanks, springs and diversions)
  • Water Rights & Uses (WRU) data entry
  • Conduct field assessments using Proper Functioning Condition (PFC) protocol
  • Measure cross sections at instream flow monitoring sites
  • Other duties may be required in support of this program

Desired knowledge, skills or abilities:

  • A hydrology, natural resource, biological, physical science, or related degree.
  • One year or more experience doing hydrological work
  • Ability to perform duties in an office setting, as well as, field assignments which may result in exposure to hazards associated with foot travel to remote forested area
  • Experience working on projects which entail interpreting laws, regulations, policies or procedures under the guidance of others
  • Demonstrated ability to acquire in-depth knowledge and understanding of laws and government policies
  • Interpersonal communication, public speaking and/or customer service experience with an emphasis on partnership and stakeholder engagement
  • Experience writing reports and creating and coordinating presentations using various software programs such as PowerPoint, Illustrator, AdobeConnect, etc.
  • Enthusiasm and a positive attitude
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player
  • Social Media, information systems, & database skills a plus
  • Interest in National Service

Location: Prescott National Forest, AZ
 
Compensation: $500 weekly stipend; non-competitive hiring status upon successful completion. A monthly housing stipend is available under certain conditions.
 
Housing: The Resource Assistant will be responsible for finding their own housing in Prescott, AZ. Prescott is situated in the beautiful Northern Arizona Mountains 100 miles north of Phoenix.  There is something for everyone in Prescott, from recreating in nature, exploring the back roads of Arizona, live concerts on the plaza, museums, great restaurants, local art, and learning about Arizona's history.  The weather offers all four seasons, with sunny spring-time weather, warm summers, gorgeous fall colors and seasonably cool winters.  
 
Prior to starting this position, a government security background clearance will be required.
