Interpretation & Administrative Internship


Greening Youth Foundation (GYF, is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to nurture environmental stewardship among diverse youth and young adults, and expose them to conservation careers. Participating students gain real world, on-the-job experience as they explore federal careers in the U.S. National Park Service.

Position Title: Interpretation & Administrative Internship
NPS Unit Name: Reconstruction Era National Monument Beaufort, SC
Position Dates: Feb – April 2018

Position Description:
Be a part of the development of a new National Park Service Unit and Interpretive Programming. Intern will assist the Unit Manager and Park Ranger in the creation of the Interpretive Service operations, programs and community outreach activities (i.e. tours, walks, staffing visitor contact station & Junior Ranger Programs) for Darrah Hall, Brick Baptist Church and the Cities of Beaufort and Port Royal.

It is essential that applicants have strong communication skills (written and oral), strong work ethic and the ability to work independently. Intern must be prepared to work in a fast-paced team environment with attention to detail. Intern must be trustworthy, dependable and willing to work with people of different perspectives. Intern must have great organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and be able to write reports and create presentations.
Additional qualifications:

  • Must be currently enrolled or recent graduate of an accredited institution
  • Must be between 16 and 35 years of age
  • Must be U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or U.S. national
  • Must be able to pass a federal background check
Work Environment:       
Intern will work between the Old Firehouse (City of Beaufort), Penn Center (St. Helena Island) and City Hall of Port Royal. Some work outside when providing walking tours.

Vehicle/License Requirement:
The intern will need a personal vehicle and license to complete duties as assigned or for personal needs (grocery shopping, laundry, etc.). This position does not require operation of a government vehicle.

Compensation and Benefits:
Compensation is at a rate of $10 per hour for 380 hours.
