PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The need for preserving all of our nation's history has never been greater, we're counting on you! HBCUI (Historically Black Colleges and Universities Internship) Program is a 10-week summer experience brought to you by Greening Youth Foundation in partnership with the U.S. National Park Service. As a part of HBCUI, students from schools around the country are putting their unique skills and talents to work in preserving the contributions of African Americans to our nation's history and culture. Participants gain real-world, on-the-job experience as they explore federal careers in the U.S. National Park Service.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Position Title Operations Assistant
NPS Unit Name Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site – Topeka, KS
Position Dates May 28 – August 3, 2018
Position Description Operations assistants work with operations managers and other personnel to help keep businesses running smoothly. For example, operations assistants may have duties including resolving customer issues, filling orders, and inspecting the merchandise. They may be assigned tasks such as ordering supplies and preparing sales reports. Operations assistants may also help train employees and perform some bookkeeping duties. Throughout their work, they may be able to provide upper management with insights to further increase productivity.

Projects include but are not limited to the following:
-Digitize video oral histories conducted for BRVB exhibits
-Transcribe audio and video oral histories.
-Create a temporary display for the BRVB Changing Exhibit Case in the Visitor Center
-Create online exhibits to be featured on the BRVB webpage and social media
-Assist with updating CHSC I&E Photo and Video digital archive (
-Updating BRVB collections catalog records to improve descriptions, search terms, and add digital photos.
-Providing interpretive programs on historical topics
– Aiding in the execution of special events
-Conducting Sales in bookstore

Qualifications
Good work ethics, an open mind, show themselves to be teachable, punctual, and passionate about producing quality work.

Additional qualifications:

  • Must be currently enrolled or recent graduate of an accredited HBCU institution
  • Must be between 16 and 35 years of age
  • Must be U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or U.S. national
  • Must be able to pass a federal background check
Work Environment Work is performed both indoors and outdoors resulting in exposure to a variety of weather conditions. The work may require standing for long periods of time, walking for long distances, climbing and descending steep inclines, bending, and lifting moderately heavy items. Mental stress and physical fatigue may occur due to volume research and or projects and occasional emergency responses.
Vehicle/License Requirement A valid driver's license is required. The student may operate government vehicles. Students that are in this position must carry a valid state issued ID with them at all times. A personal Vehicle is not required.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Compensation is at a rate of $400 per week
  • Housing stipend or offsite housing is provided
  • Mandatory attendance at the all-expense paid Leadership & Careers Workshop in Washington, D.C. in August
  • Qualify for federal non-compete hiring after meeting service requirements
