Public Engagement Steward
Greening Youth Foundation (GYF, gyfoundation.org) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to nurture environmental stewardship among diverse youth and young adults, and expose them to conservation careers. Participating students gain real world, on-the-job experience as they explore federal careers in the U.S. National Park Service.
|Position Title||National Capital Park-East Public Engagement Steward Intern|

|Position Dates||Intended start date is early/mid December, however, start date is contingent on completion of background check. Internship will continue for 17 weeks|
|Position Description||The steward will work closely with the NACE Management Assistant to engage the community in the centennial of Anacostia Park and bicentennial birthday of Frederick Douglass. The steward will be expected to assist in the day to day planning, coordination, outreach and other tasks deemed necessary in order to aid the park in celebrating its milestone.
The steward will work with the visitor services and communications team while directly reporting to and assisting the NACE Management Assistant with tasks. The steward will work to create meaningful connections for youth in the community so that they can celebrate and appreciate the historic milestones of 2018.
All of the projects assigned to the steward will be geared towards increasing the awareness and protecting the natural resources of Anacostia Park and River and the Frederick Douglass Historic Site. By engaging the community in the centennial and bicentennial events, the steward will be aiding in increasing the amount of people that connect to the park. Through their efforts, the steward will potentially increase volunteers, park stewards and visitors.
|Qualifications||It is essential that applicants have strong communication skills (written and oral), strong work ethic and the ability to work independently. Intern must be prepared to work in a fast-paced team environment with attention to detail. Intern must be trustworthy, dependable and willing to work with people of different perspectives. Intern must have great organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and be a flexible and a self-starter
|Background||National Capital Parks-East (NACE) is approaching two major milestones in 2018. We will be celebrating the centennial of Anacostia Park and the bicentennial birthday of Frederick Douglass Site. Both of these historic milestones offer great opportunity to connect with the community through special events, programming, education and targeted outreach.
The steward will serve a critical role through planning, serving as a liaison to partners, providing direct support and being a key staff person in the park in order to effectively accomplish the strategic goals for both milestones. Their role will be designed to connect youth in the community to Anacostia Park and Frederick Douglass National Historic Site.
|Vehicle/License Requirement||The intern will need a valid driver's license This position may require operation of a government vehicle.|
