Support Services Specialist Resource Assistant (Intern)
Position Description:
This Resource Assistant internship will provide exposure to the Forest Service, and provide advanced training in the application of Forest Service principles and practices pertaining to administration and interacting with the public. The Resource Assistant will be trained to engage with the public and stakeholders of the national forest, maintain administrative records, among other tasks. The program will begin in January, and continue full-time for 26 weeks with the possibility of extension.
Major duties will include, but not limited to:

  • Serve as first point of contact for visitors and employee at Supervisor’s Office
  • Maintain and review all correspondence letters in Mercury Database in accordance with Forest Service direction to ensure proper format, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and correct filing designations before Forest Supervisor or Acting’s signature.
  • Filing and other business management support
  • Serves as a Collection Officer to sell National Forest Products in accordance with manual and handbook requirements
  • Responsible for ensuring the Point-Of-Sale System (POSS) Server computer is up and running for all 5 POSS registers to keep functioning.
  • Manages the Public Distribution List (pdl) for incoming and outgoing employees.
  • Forest Directives Manager, receiving, distributing, and posting incoming directives. Prepare Forest Supplements to ensure they were formatted in accordance with Forest Service Manual (FSM) & Forest Service Handbook (FSH) direction.
  • Assist with billing procedures for Special Use Permits
  • Other duties may be required

  • Business management experience
  • Strong writing, organization, and communication skills (oral and written)
  • Enthusiasm and a positive attitude
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player
  • Ability to pass relevant background check
  • Social Media, information systems, & database skills a plus
  • Interest in National Service

Location: Kaibab National Forest Supervisor’s Office, Williams, AZ 
Compensation: $500 weekly stipend; non-competitive hiring status upon successful completion. A monthly housing stipend is available under certain conditions.
Housing: The Resource Assistant will be responsible for finding their own housing in Williams or Flagstaff, AZ.  Flagstaff is approximately 40 minutes driving time from Williams, AZ.  Both towns are considered gateway communities to Grand Canyon National Park and provide all the necessary amenities.  Williams has a small-town feel and Flagstaff offers a more urban setting.
Prior to starting this position, a government security background clearance will be required.
