Urban Connections

Position Description:
This internship will provide exposure to the Forest Service, and opportunities in Urban Connections. The intern will support and assist in comprehensive planning and education to create healthy urban natural areas and ecological awareness while participating in fieldwork activities (tree identification, tree inventory, site preparation, tree planting and maintenance, site preparation and visual assessments). The position will begin in early August, and continue full-time for 52 weeks.
 
Major duties will include, but not limited to:

  • Provide both technical and material support to guide new tree planting program, CommuniTree, in the Northwest Indiana region. 
  • Cultivate community stewardship through outreach projects and encouraging neighborhood organizations to undertake community-based tree planting, and long-term maintenance (watering, insect control, mulching, pruning, shoveling etc.)
  • Support and assist in comprehensive planning and education to create healthy urban natural areas and ecological awareness 
  • Participate in fieldwork activities including tree identification, tree inventory, site preparation, tree planting and maintenance, site preparation and visual assessment of trees in urban and natural setting
  • Provide both technical and material support to guide new tree planting program in the Chicago Wilderness region 
  • Cultivate community stewardship through outreach projects and encouraging neighborhood organizations to undertake community-based tree planting, and long-term maintenance (watering, insect control, mulching, pruning, shoveling etc.)

Location: Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie (Wilmington, IL)
Compensation: $12/hour
 
Prior to starting this position, a government security background clearance will be required.
