Position Description and Responsibilities
The National Park Service is looking to hire a full-time (40 hours) intern at the Everglades National Park. This position includes working weekends and holidays. Successful applicant will be required to wear the GYF uniform (GYF shirt, name badge, and hat will be provided). Intern will need to supply their own khaki pants and either tennis shoes or working boots. This Internship is for the National Park working under the Interpretation Division.
The Interpretation Division provides Customer Services to Park Visitors. Candidates must have strong communication skills and a willingness to work with the public. Candidates must be able to work independently as well as an active team member of the Gulf Coast Staff. Intern will work in the visitor center and other visitor contact areas. Intern will assist in the Visitor Center providing safety information, answering visitor questions in person and by phone, assisting with issuing backcountry camping permits, maintaining the visitor center, such as, sweeping & dusting and participate with park related special events. Duties also comprise providing safety information and orientation to Wilderness Waterway backcountry campers. In addition, person in this position could be assigned written projects, such as, working on visitor center exhibit text and images and also with social media projects. Plus intern position could include assisting with any other miscellaneous duties as assigned and in accordance with National Park Service standards. Potential employee will be asked to keep their supervisor informed of progress and/or needs on assigned projects and enthusiastically attend training opportunities for personal/professional growth when assigned. Employee will participate in the park's safety program and at all times when appropriate wear required personal protection equipment (PPE) without being reminded.
Additional responsibilities for this position includes assisting and potentially, after training, researching and preparing programs of their own that will be provided to the public. Programs include but are not limited to 30-60 minute guiding nature walks, 15 minute boat basin talks, one and a half hour boat narrations for up to fifty passengers and guided four to eight hour canoe/kayak programs during peak visitation periods. Lastly, candidates must possess the professionalism to represent the National Park Service and Everglades National Park including through proper wearing of the uniform.
- Strong Customer Service Skills
- Fluent in English (German, Spanish and French are a plus).
- Able to swim
- Willingness to learn rescue skills and techniques
- Computer Skills (Microsoft Suite, InDesign, and social media platforms)
- Must have a valid state license
- Must have personal vehicle
- Must be able to pass a federal background check
Candidates need to be enthusiastic, have a positive attitude and able to work independently or with as a team member and have a strong work ethic.
This is an indoor (approximately 70%) and outdoor position (approximately 30%). The positon requires long periods of time standing, paddling up to four hours, standing and walking on uneven surfaces, working in hot and humid and sunny conditions and potentially encountering biting insects and animals.
A valid driver's license is required and the ability to drive a government vehicle safely. Candidate must have their own transportation to and from the job site and to gather their own provisions which could be up to 45 miles drive away at Marco Island or Naples Florida.
Compensation and Benefits
- Compensation is at a rate of approximately $15 per hour
